Staffing Industry Trends

In this current healthcare climate, there are certain trends within the staffing industry. While it’s clear that more assistance is needed, it’s helpful to know the full scope of the situation.
An astounding 47,000 new healthcare jobs were added per month in 2022. The U.S. Bureau of Labor believes that this is only the beginning. There is an expectation that this will continue through 2023.

Although this number seems quite high, the heavy workload put on healthcare workers has made it increasingly necessary. This means that staffing agencies are more important than ever.
There were some unfortunate side effects caused by the high number of COVID-19 hospitalizations and doctor visits. Routine and preventative procedures had to be pushed back due to insufficient staffing. This has exacerbated health issues that could have been prevented.

Some acute issues that could have been treated have become more serious and chronic. This is why staffing continues to grow even as COVID-19 requires less attention.

One of the major concerns by medical professionals was the fall in compensation in 2020. In 2022, the trend began to shift. Depending on particular roles, professionals have seen a rise in salary between 1-13%. This is expected to continue to rise in 2023.

Multiple factors have left healthcare workers feeling burnt out and forgotten. Three years of COVID, low wages, poor hiring techniques, and high turnover rates pose a major impact. Paperwork responsibilities have also increased with physicians reporting that they now spend 15 or more hours a week on paperwork alone in 2022.

Trends have shown that work turnover decreases as hiring increases. When workers feel supported, they are more capable of doing their jobs. This is why the focus has shifted toward staffing in the last two years.
